Philanthropist
Honey Sherman is married to Barry Sherman, founder of Apotex Inc. and 10th wealthiest
person in Canada (net-worth $3.3 billion USD).
Honey Sherman's community involvement includes membership on the Boards of Mount
Sinai Hospital, Baycrest Centre, and United Jewish Appeal.
The Shermans contribution also include founding the Apotex Theatre at North York's
Ford Centre for the Performing Arts and a $6 million commitment to Baycrest Centre's
new Jewish Home for the Aged. Most recently, they have added to their founders gift,
and have made a $1 million cash donation to United Way's Endowment, the Tomorrow
Fund.
Their Apotex Foundation supports community, education, scientific and Jewish causes.
In 2002, they made the initial donation of $50 million to start an endowment with
the United Jewish Appeal Federation. Since then, they’ve committed $5 million toward
a York University research facility and given $7 million to the U of T faculty of
pharmacy, housed in a building carrying the name of a former competitor, Leslie
L. Dan of Novopharm. The Sherman Campus ($25 million), an expansion of the Bathurst
Jewish Community Centre, is slated to open in 2011.
The Sherman Family exemplify the true spirit of caring in our community. Their generosity,
volunteerism and support will always be remembered by the many people whose lives
they have touched.
